I work in the field of oral surgery within a hospital and primary care setting. I completed my undergraduate training from the University of Birmingham in 2017. 
During my time working in hospital, I have developed a keen interest in oral medicine and the  management of mucosal lesions. My work on differential diagnoses of lip swellings has been published in the Aesthetics Journal. 
Alongside my surgical training, I have completed a post graduate certificate in dental education and provide local and regional teaching for my colleagues. I am also leading a research project comparing lingual frenectomy outcomes in neonates and adolescents. 


Aims:

The aim of this course is give an overview of the issues faced by patients with dry mouth and suggestions on how to manage patients with dry mouth in primary care to support their oral health.

 

Course objectives:

Discuss the role of saliva in protecting against oral infections and dental caries and how to manage patients diagnosed with dry mouth.
Demonstrate methods and classifications to diagnose dry mouth.
Differentiate between the difference in dental management for post radiotherapy cancer patients and Sjogren’s patients discharged for follow up in primary care for their dentition.
List the medications and systemic conditions linked to dry mouth.

 


Learning outcomes:

Following the course you will be able to:

Explain the role of saliva in the oral cavity, and list the features/ symptoms of a patient suffering from dry mouth.
Appreciate the issues patients post head and neck radiotherapy may present with to the dentist.
Have knowledge of relevant guidelines and resources to aid management of patient suffering with dry mouth/ xerostomia.
List the common medications that may cause dry mouth/ xerostomia.
