Infection Control Specialist. Sandra was employed as Dental Infection Control Advisor to three PCTs from 2004 – 2015. She is now the Director of InfectionControlSpecialists.co.uk and conducts practice inspections and training for NHS and private healthcare providers.

Aims:

To reduce the occurrence of infectious diseases in the dental surgery, and to provide clarity about working within the CQC guidelines.


During the session the course provider will:

  • To explain the stages of the decontamination process as identified in the HTM 01-05 guidance document and discuss safe management of healthcare waste in the dental sector.
  • To examine the HTM 01-05 guidance document and discuss how key environmental legislation applies to dentistry.
  • To provide information and advice on how the Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulates and inspects health and social care services, setting out the principles and the new operating model.
  • To consider the impact on dental services.

Learning outcomes:

Following the session delegates will be able to: 

  • Describe and summarise key stages of the decontamination process, and implement effective infection control procedures to reduce the risks of cross-infection.
  • Outline essential and best quality requirements of the HTM 01-05 guidelines, assess own practice level of compliance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Outline effective strategies for safely maintaining dental unit waterlines and summarise the key issues relating to waste disposal in dental practice, assess own practice level of compliance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Demonstrate recognition of effective measures to manage the risk of physical, chemical and microbiological contamination in the practice of dentistry.
  • Gain an understanding of the new operating model, recall the key five domains for registration and future inspections to update your practice model.
