Speaker: Penelope Shirlaw
Penelope Shirlaw retired recently from her post as Consultant in Oral Medicine at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Trust and Honorary Reader at the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral and Craniofacial Sciences at King’s College London.
She has been an intermittent Locum Consultant in Oral Medicine at Liverpool Dental Hospital since November 2021.
She qualified in Dentistry from Birmingham University in 1980 and followed a career in Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine after gaining her FDS. She was admitted to the GDC Oral Medicine Specialty list in 2001 and was appointed as a Consultant in Oral Medicine at Guy’s & St Thomas’s Hospital in April 2003.
She was Clinical Director for Dental services in 2004-2010 and has held a number of senior clinical management roles since.
She is currently chair of the London Local Dental Professional Network (LDN) for NHS England London Region.
She is a member of the board of the Faculty of Dental Surgery RCS England.
She was President of British & Irish Society for Oral Medicine BISOM (2017-2020) and has been a past Deputy Chair of the MJDF examination and past chair of the Association of Dental Hospitals.

Aims:
A session to help identify the common presentations of oral pre-malignant and malignant disease and to understand the referral pathways and timings to best manage the patient.
Course Objectives
Provide discussions about the management and impact of diagnosis on the patients both during the initial referral point and the necessary aftercare and support required.
Describe how to educate patients in general dental practice on possible risk factors for oral cancer, including having confidence in delivering 'very brief advice'.
Identify oral pre-malignant conditions and identify the appropriate referral pathways, and when specialist advice is necessary.
Learning outcomes:
An improved understanding of the incidence, diagnosis and prevention of oral lesions and mouth cancer.
Recognise local and national support services and resources in the care of mouth cancer.
Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with patients about the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of oral lesions, with an improved knowledge of the disciplines involved in the patient journey through diagnosis to treatment of head and neck cancer patients, alongside the role the general dental practitioner may need to play.
