BED009: The GDC Fitness to Practice Process & How to Stay Safe for DCPs

Aims:

To provide delegates with an understanding of the GDC Fitness to Practice process, including how to engage with the process should this happen to you.

Learning outcomes:

Course Objectives

During the session the course provider will:

  • Outline the function of the GDC, review the standards for dental Professionals and discuss what they mean to us.
  • Describe what happens when a complaint reaches the GDC, and why this may happen.
  • Educate delegates on the status and nature of complaints reaching the GDC.
    Describe the process for the registrant on the lead up to and during a fitness to practice hearing
  • Discuss how to engage with the Fitness to Practice process, should you find yourself in this scenario.

Learning Content

Following the session delegates will be able to:

  • To increase knowledge and understanding in the GDC Fitness to Practice Process.
  • To revise knowledge in the GDC standards and understand what is expected of us as Professionals.
  • To know what to expect should a GDC case arise for you.
  • To apply knowledge gained during this session to your own clinical practice, benefiting both patients and personal development.

Information:

- Speaker: Jodie Mahoney

- Speaker Biography: Jodie has been working in dentistry since 2004, firstly qualifying as a dental nurse and then later attending Sheffield university to study Dental Hygiene and Therapy, graduating in the summer of 2009. After gaining experience in both private and NHS primary care, Jodie went on to further her career in teaching and mentoring. She gained her Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from the University of Dundee in 2017 and has been leading the Midlands Dental Therapy Foundation Training Programme since 2014. She provides CPD courses to Dental Professionals in and around the Midlands region. Jodie started teaching undergraduate Dental Hygiene and Therapy at the University of Birmingham in 2015 and sits on the GDC Fitness to Practise panel.
