Speaker: Alexandra Lyne

  Lexy (Alexandra Lyne) is a consultant in Paediatric Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Hospital in London (UK),

and an honorary research associate at University College London. She completed her MSC in 2018 on cognitive

function for children having inhalation sedation for dental treatment. In 2019, she joined an international research

team with Brett Duane and Paul Ashley, looking at sustainability in dentistry, in particular life cycle assessment methodology.

Recently, Lexy has been working on how to address the environmental damage caused by nitrous oxide used in dental inhalation

sedation, and how this can be weighed up against the patient benefit.

Aims:

The aim of this course is to introduce the dental team to environmental sustainability in dentistry.

 

Course objectives

  • Introduce the topic of sustainability. 
  • Demonstrate how dentistry may have a negative effect on the environment.
  • Provide examples of how professional practice could be more sustainable. 

Learning outcomes:

Following the course you will be able to:

  • Describe how dentistry may have a negative effect on the environment.
  • Identify areas of their professional practice that could be more sustainable. 
  • Propose ideas for sustainable quality improvement projects within their own setting.
