CAM170323 Skill Mix - Educating the practitioner on how to use this in the team

Speaker: Prof. Nick Barker

GDP, Chair Essex Local Professional Network, Professor of Oral Health Sciences & Periodontology MSc Module Lead at University of Essex, Honorary Senior Lecturer, Accredited Level 2 Endodontist and Periodontist and Dento-Legal Expert. Nick qualified in 1990 from London Hospital where he continued to work as the House Surgeon in Prosthodontics. He moved into general practice and became a practice principal in 1994 in a two surgery practice. The practice has now developed into a multi-surgery practice over 3 sites with a wide skill mix that involves Hygienists, Therapists, Extended Duties Dental Nurses, Foundation Year 1 and Associate dentists. He gained an MSc with Distinction in Restorative Dental Practice from UCL Eastman and also works as the Chair of Essex Local Professional Network, an elected member of English and UK Councils at the BDA


Aims:

Discuss the basis of skill mix and its implementation in practice.

 

Course objectives: 

Evaluate the scope of practice of each member of the team.

Appraise the current concepts and opportunities for the use of skill mix in practice.

Critically appraise how skill mix fits within the current regulatory systems


Learning content: 

Discussion as to scope of practice and its implications.

Review of the concepts of skill mix from the available evidence base.

Analyse the current regulatory frameworks and how these permit the use of a wider skill mix.
