This course will provide an overview of the scientific and clinical evidence base about conscious sedation in a dental setting in primary care

Educational Objectives

By the end of this course/session you/participants will be able to:

1.     Give definition of Conscious Sedation

2.     Explain patient’s pathway for care planning appropriately, effectively and safely by evaluating the risks and benefits of suggested treatment modalities

3.     A brief description of the different conscious sedation techniques, indication and contraindications for each technique

4.     Case presentations

By the end of this course, delegates will be able to enhance patient care by appropriate selection and implementation of the following principles:

1. Definitions of conscious sedation and sedation “endpoint”
2.  To select the most appropriate path for individual patient considering their anxiety levels, oral and general health and the complexity of a dental procedure
3. The different conscious sedation techniques: inhalation sedation using N₂O and intravenous sedation using midazolam
4. Working with the rest of oral healthcare team members for managing patients
