Aims:

Course Aims:

These 4 sessions will support dental and pharmacy professionals to identify how to work together to promote:

  1. Effective antibiotic stewardship
  2. Appropriate analgesia
  3. Correct use of the more obscure items available on dental prescribing
  4. Awareness of interactions and side effects (eg steroids, anticoagulants, MRONJ).

The workshops will enable general dental practitioners and pharmacy professionals to work as part of a multidisciplinary team to support patients with their dental treatment. These sessions will support dental and pharmacy professionals to identify how to work together to promote effective antibiotic stewardship and support people with urgent dental conditions.

Course Objectives:

  1. Review antimicrobial resistance, why it is important and national strategies to reduce the risk of antimicrobial resistant infections. The impact of antimicrobial resistant infections and the effect that the COVID - 19 pandemic has had on dental antibiotic prescribing will be analysed.
  2. Interactively explore urgent dental conditions and workshop appropriate management techniques from the dentists' and the pharmacists' perspectives. Engage the candidates in strategies for utilising the full range of options available for dental prescribing, including correct use of the less commonly prescribed medications.
  3. Evaluate practical approaches to a multidisciplinary approach between the dentist and pharmacist to support and optimize prescribing for dental conditions.
  4. Explain antimicrobial resistance, why it is important, and national strategies to reduce the risk of antimicrobial resistant infections.
  5. Guide the learner to recognise urgent dental conditions and discuss appropriate management techniques.

Following this course you will be able to:

  1. Implement changes in your own prescribing practice to reduce antimicrobial resistance and the impact of antibiotic resistant infections.
  2. Justify appropriate management techniques in urgent dental conditions and evaluate when to use antibiotics in line with national guidelines.
  3. Create and implement a multidisciplinary approach (pharmacist / dentist) to support and optimize prescribing for dental conditions. Evaluate how anticoagulants are used in practice and how they affect patients’ dental treatment.
  4. Assess how medicines can cause medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) and plan suitable adjustments in patients’ dental treatment. Empower joint decision-making for patients in the options for  treatment and the monitoring required while taking medicines that can cause MRONJ.
